What is Thrival and Why Should You Care?

Have you ever wondered why some people and businesses seem to be in a constant state of thriving? They win awards, bring in new clients, and accelerate through the business world while you feel stuck in survival mode, unable to break free.

You’re not alone. Many of us feel like we’re just keeping our heads above water, wondering why we can’t thrive like others around us. It’s easy to get caught up in ‘compareitis’—that feeling of constantly comparing yourself to others—and the imposter syndrome that often comes with it. But there is a way out. There is a way to thrive.

My Personal Experience with Survival Mode

I’ve been there too. I’ve felt like nothing I did was ever good enough, like everyone else was progressing, and I was left behind. Imposter syndrome can cripple your confidence and your business, and it certainly did mine. I kept asking myself why I was stuck and how I could let go of the feelings that were holding me back.

That’s when I discovered Simon Sinek’s work, particularly his book Start with Why. It seemed like the perfect place to begin, so I signed up for a couple of his courses. Two weeks and two courses later, I finally understood my ‘Why’. It was a liberating moment that helped me see why my business existed and what was really driving me forward.

The Power of Knowing Your Why

My ‘Why’ incorporates all the things I cherish most: creativity, writing, and performing. I’m a spoken word poet, so words have always been my passion. My coach suggested that I condense my Why Statement into one word—something simple that could act as my North Star and guide everything I do.

As a word-lover, I accepted the challenge. But condensing an entire mission into one word was far from easy. After a lot of reflection, I realised that my Why wasn’t just about survival or thriving—it was about continually striving towards thriving and staying in that state. That’s when the word Thrival was born.

What is Thrival?

Thrival (verb): The continuous act of elevating your business, project, or life to a state of thriving and maintaining it.

Thrival isn’t just about reaching a moment of success; it’s about making it a daily practice. It’s about waking up every morning and asking yourself, “Am I living my Why? Am I in Thrival?” It’s a constant, active state of progress, not a one-off achievement.

For me, Thrival has become my North Star. It’s the principle that guides me in everything I do—both in business and in life. It reminds me that I’ve earned my place at the table and that I have to make the choice every day to live in Thrival.

Applying Thrival to Your Life and Business

When I started focusing on Thrival, I realised that my original mission—bringing fairness into the world—was too big to achieve in one leap. It was overwhelming and left me feeling stuck. But Thrival taught me the importance of breaking down big goals into smaller, manageable steps.

Every day, I focus on the small actions I can take to move closer to my goals. This approach leads to progress and, eventually, success. It’s not about waiting for one grand moment of achievement but about taking consistent, meaningful actions each day.

Why You Should Care About Thrival

You may not have heard of Thrival before, but it’s time you did. We all need to start living in Thrival, focusing on the small, daily actions that elevate our lives and businesses. Whether you’re an entrepreneur, a creative, or working on personal development, Thrival is the mindset that will help you achieve and maintain success.

So, next time you feel like you’re stuck in survival mode, remember that Thrival is possible. It’s not just about getting by—it’s about thriving every single day, in everything you do. Thrival is a state of mind.

How Business Stays in Thrival

Don’t just take my word for it. A quick query to ChatGPT AI revealed several compelling examples of how businesses thrive by adopting a Thrival mindset:

  • Adaptability and Continuous Improvement: According to CB Insights, 29% of startups fail because they run out of cash. However, startups with a Thrival-like approach—focusing on adaptability and continuous improvement—are better equipped to avoid these common pitfalls.
  • Growth Mindset: The Thrival mindset aligns with the idea of a growth mindset, coined by psychologist Carol Dweck. Businesses led by those who believe in constant development and learning are more likely to innovate, take risks, and achieve sustained success over time.
  • Employee Wellbeing Equals Profitability: Gallup research shows that companies with highly engaged employees outperform their competitors by 21% in profitability and enjoy lower absenteeism rates. Prioritising personal Thrival for employees leads directly to greater business success.
