Where are you on the road to success?

You’ve been working your socks off on your business, have you thought about how much progress you’ve made? If you are anything like me probably not!

Here’s a super idea to get you knowing for sure, with only six simple steps to take. It’s helped me so much in my own development.

Let’s get practical…

Have you thought about where your practice will be in five years’ time?

If you answered:

  • Yes – that’s great; it’s time for a review.
  • No – that’s ok, it’s time to get creative!
  • Not sure – it’s time to get even more creative!

To ensure your sustained success, plotting and measuring your progress is vital. It can be a tad boring I know. So, to get your creative juices flowing, let’s get you drawing your own road map to success.

Step 1 – Define success

What is your definition of success – bearing in mind not everyone’s is the same? Yes, take some time to reflect on what your personal definition of success is.

Not what you think others want you to say. Not what you think it should be. Write down your very own definition of success, no matter how off the wall it seems!

How did that make you feel?

Step 2 – Where are you now?

Take some time to reflect and write down where you are now in terms of your business, life, career and anything else you feel is relevant.

  • Are you working alone wanting to be more collaborative?
  • Are you ready to spend more time on you now the kids are at school?
  • Are you ready for your next promotion?

Describe what life looks like for you right now. Write down honestly, accurately and precisely at this moment. If you are not where you want to be, that’s ok.

Step 3 – What is your overall vision?

Take some time to think about where you want to be in five years’ time in terms of business, life and career. Describe what you picture in full:

  • What are you doing?
  • What successes are you celebrating?
  • What have you learnt?
  • What challenges have you overcome?

What is life really like five years in the future – feel it!

Step 4 – Getting from now to your vision

Think about your definition of success. Think about this future you now see. Are the two aligned nicely yet?

You may need to make a few amendments to your vision or success-definition. You may need to take some things away. You may need to add some things.

Adjust and refine until your vision of success is in clear focus.

Now that you have that picture a bit clearer, reflect on the main 3-5 steps you can take to get from now to your vision…

If you are not sure, metaphorically step into your future and look back on what you did to get there. It’s almost like waving a magic wand if you could know the answer, what would those 3-5 steps be?

Training? Resources? Buy-in the skills you need?

Write your 3-5 steps down. These are the ‘stepping stones’ to get you from now to your version of success.

Make sure your steps are realistic, manageable and make sense given your ultimate vision of success. You can amend them at any time.

You may need some sub-steps to help you hop and skip along to your vision.

Step 5 – Get creative!

Great, now grab some paper, coloured pencils, pens, glitter anything crafty. Draw your road map to success.

Write down where you are now in the bottom left-hand corner, where you want to be in the top right-hand corner. Draw your road connecting ‘now’ and ‘vision’. Place the stepping stones in the order you need to get you there.

Get totally creative. Once complete keep your road map visible.

As you achieve each step toward your vision, throw yourself a celebration. You deserve it!

Step 6 – Review and amend

Need I say more…? As each step gets you closer, you may need to revisit your road map, revise and redo it. Especially when you reach your vision of success!
