Is it too late to change direction?

Direction is the most important thing a human can find. Direction or purpose is what gives us our sense of meaning and contribution to the world.

No wonder so many of us struggle with this concept.

In short, it’s never too late to change direction, here’s why.

How many times have you asked yourself any of these universal questions:

  • “Am I too [old/young] to change direction in [business/career/life]?”
  • “Is there anything more to do?”
  • “Am I too stuck in my ways/Not even sure what my ways are?”

Finding your direction or purpose is a lifelong journey. It can never be too late.

One of my closest friends had changed careers at age 60! Rather than retire she went on to set up a new business.

Another friend changed her life-direction. She went from ‘about-to-be married’ to world traveller (and hasn’t looked back).

A few of my friends have had some new career adventures in their 50’s.

My own mother retired at 70 and started volunteering. These are the people who inspire me most.

I changed direction in my 30’s. You can change direction too.

Getting focused on your life’s direction

You can take a leaf from the direction-changers book.

How did my friends know what their purpose was and what can you learn from them?

  1. They trust themselves

When inspiration strikes, stop, listen and trust what comes to you. Even though it sounds weird, trust you know what is best for you.

If you feel anything less than 100% trust, take a moment to check in with yourself. Feel the change in your body and soul. Doubt, no matter how small, needs your attention.

When you feel you trust yourself, go with those feelings.

  1. They act on ideas by following their intuition

You know that little voice that guides you well? Act on the ideas it whispers in your ears. That’s your intuition speaking. If it feels 100% right, act on the idea without hesitation.

  1. They ignore those who say they are crazy/shouldn’t rock the boat

A lot of people will tell you that you’re crazy. If you feel this change is for you, avoid the nay-sayers and surround yourself with those who inspire you.

It’s better to live knowing the outcome than always wondering what could’ve been.

  1. They are clear about what they want

When you are crystal clear about what you want, nothing can hold you back. Others will feel your clarity and support will follow. Think about other times in your life this has happened.

You can change your direction by turning to a clear vision. Being clear on the help you need and not wavering from the end result.

5. They make a plan and stick to it

Make your plans to change and stick to them. Keep going. Get an accountability partner to keep you on track.

Your plan is what will keep you on track, help you review what’s working and be your progress marker. Worth having a solid plan in place. Right?

What are you waiting for?

Whatever it is you want to change, change it. Happiness is your right and you deserve to be happy now. Not later.

Keep putting one foot in front of the other and you will get there. You will feel rewarded regardless of the outcome.

Start by using the five points above as your baseline. You know the direction you want to take, follow it. The results will amaze you.

Try these pointers out and come back to tell me how it’s working out for you. I love hearing your successes and…

… Sharing keeps you accountable.
